She wasn't all that big of a woman, though taller than many of her peers from my observations, but a giant in advocating for women and babies died today. Edwina Froehlich died on June 8, 2008 after suffering a stroke in late May.
She was one of seven founders of La Leche League International, an organization I am passionate about supporting, in large part becuase of the support I found from my local LLL groups after having Liam and Anastasia. I'm now an active volunteer with LLLI and have had the chance to meet or be near Edwina on a few occasions. She, like the other founders I have met or had the opportunity to sit near, glowed with a light that was bright enough to feel, if not actually see.
The world is a bit dimmer today, although the influence Edwina and the other founders of LLLI is so broad and far-reaching that it's also much, much brighter. For moms and babies everywhere, I want to say thank you. I can't imagine having taken this parenting journey without the love and trust in myself I learned through my association with La Leche League.
Donations can be made in her memory here.
